THE FORGOTTEN ORIGINS OF PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALING
Long before the rise of modern psychoanalysis, Muslim
scholars were already exploring the deepest questions of the human mind, the nature of suffering, and the path to inner
well-being. The Spiritual Medicine brings together one of the most remarkable intellectual exchanges of the Islamic Golden Age. In his celebrated treatise, the physician-philosopher Abû Bakr al-Rāzī presents a practical guide for overcoming anxiety, anger, attachment, and destructive passions through reason, self-discipline, and philosophical reflection. His work stands as one of the earliest systematic explorations of psychological health in world history.
Al-Rāzī’s vision did not go unchallenged. In powerful responses, the distinguished thinkers Abû Ḥāțim al-Rāzī and Ḥamid al-Dīn al-Kirmānī defend divine revelation, spiritual authority, and the metaphysical foundations of human flourishing. Together, these texts reveal a vibrant debate over the true medicine of the soul—a debate whose questions remain strikingly relevant today.
